Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do you repair jewelry? Yes, we have a full time goldsmith in our store. We size rings, supply new heads, repair and tighten prongs, set stones, repair broken chains and bracelets, and supply new clasps, plus much more. In short, we do most basic jewelry repairs on the premises. Some work requires a special skill like bead stringing, or special equipment like casting and laser soldering, so that work is done off site by select craftsmen.
2. How long do jewelry repairs take? We do our best to meet your needs. We offer an express service. There are many repairs that can be done while you wait, or within 24 hours. There is an additional charge for this express service. Our usual repair time is two weeks.
3. Are your watch repairs done on the premises? We do change watch batteries and shorten watch bracelets for most watches. We do not repair any watches on site. We have been using the same local watchmakers for over fifty years. They are able to work on most time pieces. We use authorized service centers for specialty watches. All of our Rolex repairs are done by Rolex.
4. How long do watch repairs take? We are able to change most watch batteries and shorten most watch bracelets while you wait. If your watch is a water resistant model and you would like us to guarantee the water resistance after the battery is changed, your watch will have to be sent to our watchmaker for special service. This usually takes two weeks. Specialty watches or watches requiring parts often take longer. Full watch service, to clean, oil and regulate the movement, usually takes three to four weeks. Again, specialty watches or watches requiring parts often take longer. Rolex repairs take four to six weeks.
5. Do you custom jewelry design? Yes, our goldsmith is also a jewelry designer. With your help, he will create a one-of-a-kind just for you. Starting with your gemstones or just a good idea, he can make your dream come true.
6. How long does it take to complete a custom design? A complicated design may take four or five weeks. After your initial meeting with our designer there are many steps before completion. He may do one or more to scale sketches of your design. He may hand carve a wax model for your approval and from that model he will cast your piece. From that rough casting, he will hand polish and hand assemble your finished jewelry.
7. Do you do jewelry appraisals? Yes, we have an appraisal day once a month. The appraisals are done on site by appointment by an independent jewelry appraiser. She is a graduate gemologist and a Certified Senior Member of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA). She will provide you with a complete description of your jewelry item, a current replacement value and a photograph. You will receive two copies of your appraisal and we keep a file copy. Our appraiser is happy to answer your jewelry questions while she works. Most people find the appraisal experience very informative and a lot of fun. The minimum charge for an appraisal is $95. The price depends on the size of the gems and the complexity of the items. If you have a number of items to be appraised, you will be charged an hourly rate.
